Elections for the 2016 Youth Committee were held at Beach LYF camp on Sunday 13th March. 16 teens nominated for only 6 positions, so the competition was intense. Each teen nominating had to explain why they wanted to be on committee. Niketta , a year 10 student from Thornlie High School said she wanted to “do something good for the people just starting Leading Youth Forward. I want to give back to UCFK and LYF for everything they’ve done for me over the years.” Dre, a young man in year 10 at South Fremantle High School said, “I want to be a good leader and to plan the big day out event”.
The Youth Committee was started in 2014 by Sorcha Stapleton. This year Sorcha has moved to Kununurra for rural medical work and so has passed on the reigns of the Youth Committee initiative. The continued growth and development of the youth committee program is a testament to her hard work and inspiration. We look forward to seeing the program grow in this new phase of it’s development.
This year Dave Winter and Kate Johnson will be mentoring the youth committee as they learn and develop new leadership skills. Their combined mission is to plan and organise the final Big Day Out for 2016. Along the way they will also learn about public speaking, professionalism and organisational skills.
We wish them all the best for this year and look forward to seeing what they cook up for us in October on BDO4!
